Boarding School Readiness and Transition

March 24, 2010

I want to call attention to an article on the web entitled “Boarding School Readiness and Transition: A Perspective for Parents” by Michele Phoenix, who attended Black Forest Academy. As an alumnus and staff member of BFA, she offers some firsthand insights that could be very helpful if you find yourself considering boarding school. Here is an excerpt of the introduction to her article and the link to the full article.

“It doesn’t seem possible that 22 years have passed since my parents dropped me off at BFA. I was entering 9th grade at the time. The high school occupied only the top two floors of the building it now owns. There were fewer students and fewer teachers. We met for chapel in what is now the art room and for gym in what is now the shop. To say that things are different today would be an understatement, yet the essentials remain the same: the value of BFA…the quality of the education it offers, and the sadness associated with the separation of parents and children at the beginning of every school year.”

I know a few teens that have had success at Midwest Academy, a boarding school in Iowa. Great Article
